A swarm of honeybees led to a 46-minute delay of a Jaipur-bound IndiGo flight at the Surat International Airport on Monday. Videos showing the honeybees clustered on the aircraft’s belly cargo door went viral on social media.
S C Bhalse, Director, Surat International Airport, told The Indian Express, “We are shocked. Our staff were present near the flight when it landed at the Surat International Airport from Jaipur. The belly cargo door was opened to load the luggage of the passengers. One of the staffers spotted the swarm of honeybees and informed us. We got it removed by our disaster management team, which used a water cannon. The flight was delayed for around 46 minutes for its journey to Jaipur.”
“We have set up an internal committee… We assume that they (honey bees) might have come from the eastern side of the airport. We have checked the footage of all CCTV installed at the airport, but nothing has been found. We are working on it.”

Sources at Surat International Airport, meanwhile, stated that the IndiGo flight landed on Monday afternoon around 3.45 pm from Jaipur. The approximate turnaround time was 35 to 40 minutes and the flight was scheduled to leave at 4:20 pm, they added.
E H Pathan, a member of ‘We work for Working at Surat Airport’, an NGO, said: “We are also shocked to see how in such a short time thousands of honeybees came and got stuck on the belly cargo door of the flight, while it was kept open. We suspect that there are some beehives on the airport campus. We are trying to find out the source.”
