The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team for the 2002 riots cases today submitted its report with reference to a complaint lodged by Zakia Jafri widow of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and a witness to the Gulberg Society massacre and activist Teesta Setalvad in a sealed cover to the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court.
The report has been filed pursuant to the order of the apex court on September 12,2011 with reference to Zakias petition seeking criminal action against Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 61 others for their alleged complicity in the larger conspiracy related to the riots.
The SC had ordered the SIT to look into the complaint. But the court was not satisfied with the subsequent investigation, following which it ordered the amicus-curaie in the petition and senior lawyer at SC Raju Ramchandran to inquire on his own into the matter and submit a report.
After he submitted a report, the apex court ordered the SIT to submit its final report related to the complaint before the competent court after considering Ramchandrans report. The SC also made it clear that the concerned magisterial court would not dispose off any any closure report in the complaint by the SIT before hearing the petitioners.
The report was submitted before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate M S Bhatt after hectic discussions among SIT officials, including its legal adviser R S Jamuvar,at their office in Gandhinagar.
