Simplicity and Style

A sunday at the fashion week beckons all the stylish monsieurs and mesdames to sport their best.

The silhouettes were simple, but fabrics left everyone mesmerised on Day four

A sunday at the fashion week beckons all the stylish monsieurs and mesdames to sport their best. But I wasn’t left too impressed with the outfits nor with the accessories collection… but this was only until Anu Dewan walked in with a black Raffia koi knot clutch from Bottega Veneta. I asked Anu where she bought it from, but she wouldn’t tell me. I guess she’s heard about my bag fetish. I was wandering about,a tad depressed for not having met any of my celeb friends, when Shatrughan Sinha walked in. The Sinha couple is often spotted at fashion dos these days — after all, their daughter Sonakshi is looking at a full-fledged modelling career. This time the occasion was Pria Kataria Puri’s show at LFW. High on glamour but low on creativity, the collection may have impressed the Sinhas but not me.

Later,I saw Sridevi and Boney Kapoor rush into the Carlsberg Lounge and I wondered what was up. Recalling that the Nandita Mahtani/ Vikram Phadnis show was up next,I quickly ran into the lobby to spot Farah Khan,Bhavna Pandey,Tabu,Raveena Tandon,Maheep Kapoor,Sushmita Sen and Tania Deol. SoBoites Haseena Jethmalani and Natasha Poonawalla drove all the way to support their fellow townie Nandita. The boys were not the kind to stay far behind,as I saw those young turks,Zayed Khan and Kunal Kapoor, too. Raja Dhody was also there, but MIA was Queenie. I guess she knew the guestlist well in advance.

Nandita’s show however, evoked a sense of déjà vu as models sauntered down the ramp in chiffon kurtis and kaftans. But a couple of off-shouldered and strapless dresses in blue and silver gave the collection an edge. But there was nothing that I could reckon with from Vikram’s line. The velvet shrugs, silk jackets and chiffon saris didn’t leave me impressed one bit. What an end to the day.

I returned to the venue on Day four,in high hopes. For starters, there was a knitted line by Anand Bhushan, which was a class apart. Detailed, knitted tops and jersey dresses had everyone applauding this emerging designer. Myoho by Kiran Jaisinghani and Meghna Agarwal and Neha Agarwal, were impressive too. Neha,a protegee of Sabyasachi, dished out a line to make her mentor proud. Kiran and Meghna’s light georgette gowns had Kallol Dutta and Nachiket Barve hooting for them. I too joined in. Later,I met Alka Nishar too,who looked happy with the trio. “Expect a lot from this talented lot,” she promised.

In between,I caught up with Rohit of Rohit/Abhishek,who was sporting the trendy jodhpurs. “Indian is definitely in,” he confided in me,“We should stop looking to the west for inspiration. And jodhpurs look beautiful on women too,” he hastened to assure me,after he saw the doubtful look on my face. But it’s the Westside show, presented by Wendell Rodricks,Narendra Kumar and Manish Gupta, that I was looking forward to… and I’m glad I hurried through my Greek salad to sit for it. Nari left me a little cold with his ‘librarian chic’ designs, but Wendell made it worth my time. Inspired by Pieter Cornelis Mondrian’s abstract paintings, the collection was essentially white and black, with splashes of colour in uneven panels; the Mondrian minimalism was beautifully translated onto the clothes. But what really made my day was seeing Malaika seated in the front row, cheering on her husband Arbaaz, the showstopper for Wendell. Talk about turning tides. I remember the days when Malaika would walk the ramp and Arbaaz would be hooting for her from the wings.

TASTY TREND
Velvet looked good to designers ranging from Vikram Phadnis to Pallavi Jaipur and it looked good to us too. But a word of caution; keep it to small doses like velvet collars or patchwork.

IF YOU must BUY one thing this CASH CRUSH,MAKE IT…
This tie-and-dye silk tunic from Myoho by Kiran and Meghna. With its wide cowl neck, the tunic can also be worn as a dress.

QUICK QUIP
“I told them to add ginger to it,because then I can have it even when I have a cold.”

Wendell Rodricks on the cocktail named after him at the Grey Goose lounge.

GOOD GOSS
LFW might be a showcase for up and coming designers but rumour has it that established names count for a lot more. No wonder then that while a well-known designer was allowed to enter the lounge without an all-access card,an emerging designer’s wife wasn’t even let into the venue.
