Farmers in Saurashtra heaved a sigh of relief as several areas in the region have been receiving moderate to heavy rains for the last 24 hours. The spell has,however,claimed seven lives in Jamnagar district alone.
The main coasts in Saurashtra-Kutch,including Veraval,Porbandar,Okha and Dwarka,have given warning signal number 3 and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea.
Among districts,Junagadh and Porbandar received heavy rains,whereas Jamnagar,Rajkot,Amreli,Bhavnagar and Surendranagar experienced light to moderate spells.
In Junagadh,where weather changed suddenly on Tuesday night,Veraval and Sutrapada recorded nearly eight inches of rainfall overnight coupled with high velocity winds and lightning. Talukas like Mangrol,Kodinar,Manavadar and Talal recorded rainfall between two and six inches.
Various parts of Porbandar district have also received two to six inches of rainfall. The Barda forest area recorded six inches of rainfall,while Ranavav,Porbandar city and Kutiyana received thee inches each.
Though Jamnagar district received moderate showers,lightning claimed seven lives. The deceased have been identified as Bhikha Bharwad (35) from Jampar village,Jaga Sumani (20) from Dwarka taluka,Liri Meraman (42) from Kalyanpur,Pala Bharwad (65) from Kalyanpur,Abdul Chamadiya (40) from Bedi,Bhimshi Gojia (30) from Khambhalia and Jignesh Gambhava (20) from Jodia.
Kalyanpur recorded the highest rainfall in this coastal district at 2.5 inches,followed by two inches in Bhanvad and one inch in Jamnagar,Kalawad,Khambhalia and Lapur.
The three other districts Rajkot,Amreli and Surendranagar received rains between 0.5 and 1 inch. Rajkot city experienced a spell on Wednesday morning,after which weather remained cloudy throughout the day.
