A resident of Amreli district,Gobarbhai Savalia, has moved the Gujarat High Court (HC) with a public interest litigation seeking direction to the state government to form a policy for giving compensation to farmers whose crops are damaged by wild animals like pigs and blue bulls.

A division bench of HC has issued notice to the state government in this regard.

Savalia’s lawyer Vijay Nangesh said there were a lot of wild animals like pigs and blue bulls in their area, which damaged crops leading to 35-50% less production.

According to Nangesh, the farmers cannot kill the animals as it is a criminal offence. But,they have been suffering heavy losses due to these animals and there is no policy to grant compensation for the damages.

The petitioner said states like Madhya Pradesh,Kerala and Tamil Nadu have policies where farmers get compensation for the damage caused to crops by wild animals.
