Money transferred from MSU bank account using ‘stolen cheques’

The signature put up on the blank cheque was forged,they alleged. University accountant Bharat Shah,who filed the complaint,said somebody forged signature of deputy registrar,who is authorised to sign on the university cheques,to transfer the money.

The company’s account is with Bank of Baroda’s Lehripura branch,where Rs 46.46 lakh was transferred using these cheques,police said. University officials said they learnt about the fraudulent transaction after no vouchers for the transactions,which took place between June and November 2012,were received by the accounts division of the university.

Suspicious about foul play,the university probed into the matter and found the money was allegedly transferred into the bank account of the construction company.

“The complainant Shah,who is the accountant of the university,said some unidentified persons stole five blank cheques from his office and used those to transfer money from university account to the account of the construction company. He said signature put up on the cheques was forged,” crime branch police inspector,P L Chaudhary said.

He said the investigation into the matter was on. Police did not rule out the hand of the university staff in this case.
