On January 9, a group of children playing in their locality in Surat spotted a newborn inside a garbage container. They informed their neighbours who alerted the police, who took the infant – a boy – to the New Civil Hospital. Prematurely delivered at seven months, he was declared dead after a few hours. He was just one-day old.
A search for the abandoned child’s parents led police to the doorsteps of a 16-year-old girl. At first, the teenager denied giving birth but later, after she was presented with CCTV footage of her dropping something wrapped in a piece of cloth inside the container, she confessed to her involvement in the cover-up, said police. A medical examination at the New Civil hospital also confirmed that she had delivered a child one day ago.
Now began the search for the child’s father. A police inspector connected with the probe said, “She confessed that she had a relationship with a neighbour as a result of which she got pregnant.”
The boy was picked up from his locality on Thursday; he was found to be of the same age as the girl – 16. On Friday, the girl’s mother registered a case of rape against the minor accused.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 4 Vijaysingh Gujjar said, “The girl told us that she shared information about her pregnancy with her neighbour who gave her certain tablets. After consuming the tablets, she delivered the infant.”
The victim is undergoing treatment at a hospital while the boy is in the custody of police. He will be presented before a Juvenile Justice (JJ) Board on Saturday.
