From now on,mathematics and science teachers in state government schools will be exempted from holding the post of principal. If at all there is such a requirement and a teacher agrees to do so,he or she will have to give an undertaking in writing to the concerned District Education Officer (DEO),assuring the officer that his or her schools Class X board results and the subject curriculum will not be hampered by the added responsibility.
After much brain-storming and thorough analysis of the state board senior secondary results of previous years, the Gujarat Education Department took the decision to entirely exempt senior secondary government teachers of mathematics and science subjects from the charge of a principal or school head.
In case the seniority of these teachers or a vacant post make them eligible to apply for the post and they are willing to take charge,it is mandatory for them to give an undertaking in writing that the Class X state board results of the school in question will not be lower than 75 per cent. They are also to ensure that the subject curriculum is not affected.
This landmark decision, taken at a review meeting of the Education Department held this month, was put into immediate effect. It had become a common complaint from the staff, particularly among mathematics and science teachers, who claim that they were being overburdened by administrative work. This decision will help them focus on their curriculum as well as enable students to improve their performance. From now on,no mathematics and science teacher will be required to be the school head against their wishes, confirmed Commissioner Schools C V Som.
As per the undertaking draft, prepared by the Education Department, interested teachers will also have to assure in their undertaking that they will complete the curriculum on time, their teaching hours will not be disrupted and that the Class X board results of their class will be above 75 per cent.
It is to be noted that over the past several years, state board results for senior secondary and higher secondary classes of these two subjects have been the worst.
As per the directions issued to all the DEOs from the Education Department, the charge of school head or principal of secondary schools will be given to teachers other than Mathematics and Science.
Not only the senior secondary teachers have been exempted from the charge of a principal, but also they will not be called for administrative work outside their school, said DEO (Ahmedabad) R I Patel. With a focus to improve Class X board results, mathematics and science teachers will also be given a two-month training on these two subjects that is scheduled in August and September at Secondary Teachers Training Institute (STTI) Gandhinagar.
