AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court,on Wednesday,asked the state government and the Centre to file a status report on their stand on giving jobs on compassionate ground to the victims of the 2002 riots. The court’s direction came in the wake of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a social worker demanding early disbursement of riot relief funds to the victims and provision of government jobs to the direct descendants of those killed in the riots.

Two get 10-yr jail for attempt to murder
AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Sessions Court has sentenced two persons to 10 years’ imprisonment in a 2009 case of attempt to murder. The two were accomplices of a local gangster,Subramaniam alias Ghetiyo,who was killed by the Ahmedabad City Detection of Crime Branch in an encounter in 2009. The two convicts have been identified as Rajesh Mahare alias Rajubha and Dharmesh Nair alias Dhamo. They were accused of opening fire at a tea stall in the Vasna area of Ahmedabad,in which a girl had sustained bullet injuries. As per the case details,the two convicts had gone to the tea stall on May 11,2009,for having tea. There they had entered into an argument with the stallowner. Both the accused had subsequently gone to the stall along with Ghetiyo and opened fire at the owner.

Karnavati Express to run daily
AHMEDABAD: Frequency of train number 2933/2034 Karnavati Express has been increased from six days a week to seven days with effect from July 1,as was announced in the Rail Budget 2010-11,said a Western Railway release. It further said that train number 2215/2216 Bandra-Delhi-Bandra Garib Rath will also run four days a week in place of three days. The release added that the following train have been give stoppage at the Sabarmati station: 9223/9224 Ahmedabad-JammuTavi Express,4707/4708 Bandra-Bikaner Express,1089/1090 Jodhpur-Pune Express and 9263-9264 Porbandar-Delhi Express. Besides this,train number 6507/6508 Jodhpur-Bangalore Express has been given halt at Siddhpur.

Vanmahotsava postponed
AHMEDABAD: The state government has postponed its Vanmahotsava programme in view of the delay in arrival of the monsoon. The drive is usually organised in the first week of July. Forest officers said,this year,the programme will be rescheduled depending on the onset of monsoon.

GEC holds first coastal camp in Bhavnagar
Ahmedabad: Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) conducted a one-day camp for the residents of Ghogha village in Bhavnagar district to sensitise them on conserving coastal resources through their active involvement. Sources said the participants of the Coastal Camp were also given useful information about various government schemes pertaining to sectors like education,health,rural development,non-conventional energy and forest.
