A day after a major fire broke out at a chemical plant in Gujarat’s Surat, seven bodies were recovered from the site on Thursday morning. While the bodies are unrecognisable, the police suspect that they are the seven labourers who were reported missing on Wednesday. DNA tests will be held to identify the bodies, the police said.

The fire at the manufacturing site of Aether Industries in the Sachin GIDC industrial area broke out early Wednesday morning, injuring 27 labourers, who are under treatment at various hospitals in the city. Police sources said four labourers are critical.

“The dead bodies were recovered today morning from the fire site. We have a list of names of seven labourers who were untraceable. We suspect the bodies are theirs. We will take DNA samples of these bodies and match them with the samples from their families for their identification. We are contacting the family members,” Assistant Commissioner of Police R L Mawani said.

While the bodies were sent to New Civil Hospital, the police identified the missing labourers as Divyesh Patel, Santosh Vishwakarma, Sanatkumar Mishra, Dharmendra Kumar, Ganesh Prasad, Sunil Kumar and Abhishek Singh.

Aether company sources said that Patel was a company employee and the six others were working under contract. “We are ready to compensate. We will give compensation as per government rules. We will also give an additional amount to the families of the deceased,” Aether Industries director Kamal Tulsian said.

The Sachin GIDC police have registered an accidental death case and started a probe.

Officials from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, the Forensic Science Laboratory and the factory inspection team also visited the spot.
