After introducing the 108 emergency medical services across Gujarat, the state government on Wednesday pressed into service a mobile cancer hospital Sanjeevani Rath to diagnose and treat patients.
The Rs 1.25-crore mobile hospital project a joint venture of the state Health Department and Gujarat Cancer Society was dedicated to the people by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a simple function in the Sachivalaya premises.
His ministerial colleagues and senior government officials were present at the function.
Launching the project,Modi said the government proposed to introduce,in a phased manner, one such mobile cancer hospital in each of the districts across the state.
He claimed the project was a first of its kind in the country.
Gujarat Cancer Society Director Dr Pankaj
Shah later told Newsline that the van is well-equipped with the sophisticated machines.
Medical and para-medical staff will be formally made operational at a health check-up camp to be organised at Matar in Kheda district on October 11 in the presence of state Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas,he added.
The mobile hospital is unique as the van has four vital machines memography, endoscopy, sonography and colposcopy to diagnose the disease.
Besides, the hospital is equipped with a telemedicine communication system linked with the Ahmedabad-based cancer institute for on-the-spot guidance and advice,Dr Shah said.
We will first ask the doctors at the government-run district hospitals and Community Healthcare Centres (CHCs) to prepare cases of suspected patients and admit them in the hospitals. Then, the mobile van will reach there for a detailed diagnosis and provide emergency treatment,if required, he said.
The project is mainly aimed at providing medical services to the middle class and poor people living in far-flung areas, who have to come to major cities for diagnosis,Dr Shah added.
