Newly appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) R R Bhagat has blamed the rampant crime in the area on wider roads,a busier lifestyle and its demography, saying more than 50% of the incidents of crime in the city take place in Police Zone-I alone, making it top the crime chart.
Police Zone I comprises western areas of Ahmedabad city and has nine police stations at Vejalpur,Ellisbridge,Satellite,Vastrapur,Navrangpura,Naranpura,Gujarat University,Ghatlodia and Sola. Other police zones have four to five police stations.
Localities are huge in sprawl and there is huge distances between housing societies. People in the western parts do not even know their neighbours, unlike the residents of walled city, Bhagat said.
The maximum number of crime incidents last year related to chain snatching. Police have now started registering these as cases as loot instead of a petty theft under Section 379.
Earlier,Police Zone-I had only five police stations. Four new ones were added after senior police officers made a request to the state government to appoint two DCPs in Zone I. They had also requested for further bifurcation of police stations (equally distributed under two DCPs ) in this zone, which has not happened so far.
