(File Representational Photo) More than 1.35 crore children were screened for health-related issues under the state government’s School Health Programme in the financial year 2022-23.
According to an official release from the government, of the total children screened, 17,544 were provided treatment for heart ailments, 724 for kidney diseases, 337 for cancer, 13 children got a kidney transplant, one child got a liver transplant, 10 got bone marrow transplant and 297 underwent cochlear implant surgery. While 952 children were given clubfoot, 315 were operated for cleft lip palate.

The School Health Programme was implemented by the state government’s health department in 1998. After the Central government launched the National Child Health Programme in 2014, the Gujarat programme was renamed to SH-RBSK.
Under the programme, health check-ups of more than 12.75 crore children have been done across the state since 2014.
Of these, heart-related surgeries were facilitated for 1.39 lakh children, 17,556 children were given kidney-related treatment, 10,860 children were treated for cancer, 177 children underwent kidney transplants, 26 underwent liver transplants, 198 children got bone marrow transplants, 2,738 children were given cochlear implants, 6,987 children have been given clubfoot and 6,064 children have been treated for cleft lips.
