About 30 people have died of swine flu in the state in the last three months while nearly 300 people die of cardiovascular diseases every day, said Dr Anish Chandarana, noted interventional cardiologist in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
And yet nobody talks of the disease, said Dr Chandarana who addressed a meet today to spread awareness about cardiovascular diseases before the World Heart Day on September 27.
According to World Health Organisation,at least 20 million people will die annually from heart-related diseases six years from now and Indians will be at a higher risk compared to other genetic races, said Dr Chandarana. However,up to 80 percent of these deaths can be avoided by lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating fresh fruits and vegetables and exercising more,he said.
Besides deaths caused by heart-related diseases,WHO estimates that India could lose up to Rs 237 billion of potential income between 2005 and 2015.
Heart diseases and diabetes, long thought to be the diseases of the rich, actually harm middle and lower income classes and women very acutely as they have less time to think of the effects of their lifestyles and undergo more stress in the course of earning a living, he said.
More women die from heart diseases,he said, than from different types of cancers and AIDS combined.
It is necessary that we change our lifestyles as well as spread awareness about the risks of heart disease, he said.
