The part of PM Narendra Modi’s 68th Independence Day speech included in the ‘smart learning’ documentary was where he speaks about the dream of ‘Digital India’ — ‘When I talk of “Digital India”, I don’t speak of the elite, it is for the poor people. You can imagine what a quality education the children in villages will get, if all the villages of India are connected with broadband connectivity and if we are able to give long distance education to the schools in every remote corner of the villages.’
The CM also revealed that how the municipal corporation has not contracted this to any private company but utilised its own resources and launched this project which would teach Science and Mathematics to 54,000 students of Class VI till VIII. The AMC school board with a budget of Rs 5 crore has launched this project where municipal school teachers have prepared the lessons which would be telecast through Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG).
The Central government has allocated a total of 16 BISAG channels to Gujarat out of which 10 would be dedicated to education and remaining 6 to health care, agriculture and revenue.
The CM announced that attempts would be made to replicate this project in all the schools across the state.
“Till now, we have achieved student retention and enrollment. Now we need to focus in the quality of education in our government schools. Also, teachers should identify different talent among students and attempt to motivate them either financially, training or guidance,” she said.
The chairman of AMC school board revealed that the board has been working on this project for last six months. “The thought came when we realised that some of our teachers were using innovative and interactive tools to teach students in class. We thought why not teach all our municipal school students through lessons prepared by these teachers. Thus, this project materialised with support from the municipal commissioner D Thara,” said Jagdish Bhavsar, chairman of AMC school board.
