(PTI Photo)Ahmedabad plane crash news: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad has been shut till further notice after an Air India aircraft with 242 on board crashed within minutes after take-off on Thursday.
“Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, earlier today, was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff, outside the airport. As a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice,” an SVPIA spokesperson said in a statement.
The SVPIA authorities also advised the passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest information before proceeding to the airport. “We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation. Further updates will be provided as soon as available,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, Air India, in a statement, said that it is ascertaining the details of the accident and will share further updates shortly. The airline has also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number, 1800 5691 444, to provide more information.
Officials in the state said the crash took place around nine minutes after the plane got clearance for takeoff. There were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals and one Canadian on board the aircraft. Rigorous rescue and relief operations are underway but are hindered by dense, black smoke at the crash site.
