Acting on a contempt of court petition against Adani Group, the Gujarat High Court has ordered a special team to visit the coastal region near Mundra to ascertain if the former has violated its order banning cutting of mangrove trees in the region till further orders.

The team would be consisting of district collector and superintendent of police of Kutch and an officer nominated by the Coastal Regulation Zone Authority.

The petition has been moved by certain villagers from Zarpara in the district. The petitioners have challenged industrial activities of Adani Group in the region, which was flouting the environment norms and causing irreversible damage to the local ecology.

The petitioners had specifically mentioned the illegal cutting of mangrove trees in the region by industrial group, which was allegedly aggravating the problem of salinity ingress there. During the hearing of the PIL on July 12 ,a division bench had ordered that no mangrove trees would be cut in the region without permission of the authorities concerned.

The petitioners have stated that in spite of the HC’s order, the industrial house has not stopped its activities and was cutting mangrove trees. They have also produced photographs to support their claims.

Following the petition, the court has ordered the team to visit the region and submit its report by September 28. The petitioners have been allowed by the court to accompany the team during its visit.
