Centre allows 15 LMT sugar export in 2025-26

As per the order, export quota of 15 LMT has been pro-rated amongst those sugar mills which operated in at least one of the last three sugar seasons by taking into account their average production during the last three operational seasons — 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25.

In 2021, the country exported a record 112 lakh tonnes of sugar. As the Indian millers have been eying another year of good sugar export, the central government issued a mill-wise quota for the export, with an estimated 60 lakh tonnes of sugar to be shipped out in the first tranche.

On May 24, the Centre decided to restrict sugar exports to ensure ample availability at the start of the next season. Exports now require an NOC from the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs before it is shipped out of the country.

Despite falling short of its target, the country will be recording the highest export in the decade this season. In 2018-19, 38 lt of sugar was exported out of the country. This year, Indian sugar has been in good demand from Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
