A recipient of three National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, and two Filmfare Awards Marathi, his contributions have earned him the Padma Shri (2013). Patekar's career, launched with Gaman (1978), saw a significant rise after his role in Salaam Bombay! (1988). His performance in Parinda (1989) garnered him his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Award. His directorial debut, Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991), further solidified his position. The 1990s brought critical and commercial success with films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Angaar (winning him a Filmfare Award for Best Villain), Tirangaa, and Krantiveer (which earned him a National Film Award for Best Actor and a Filmfare Award). His performances in Agni Sakshi and Khamoshi: The Musical, both 1996 releases, yielded another National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. His impressive career continued into the 2000s with acclaimed roles in Shakti: The Power, Ab Tak Chhappan, and Apaharan, which won him a second Filmfare Award for Best Villain. His comedic turn as Uday Shetty in Welcome (2007) and its sequel, Welcome Back (2015), showcased his versatility. A notable political thriller role in Raajneeti (2010) further demonstrated his range. His portrayal of a retired stage actor in the Marathi film Natsamrat (2016) earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi). Nana Patekar’s legacy remains etched in Indian cinema's history.
