Screenwriter and director Sai Paranjpye worked with Nana Patekar in the 1990 film Disha. The filmmaker was warned about Nana’s temperament and tantrums beforehand but decided to cast him in the film, alongside Om Puri and Shabana Azmi, anyway. In a recent interaction, Sai recalled Nana losing his cool on set and walking out after he felt neglected by her.
In an interaction with Filmfare, Sai recalled, “With Nana I had one-on-one. I was warned about his temperament and at first he was very sweet.” Sai shared that she asked Nana to come to the set four days later as she wanted to shoot Shabana and Om Puri’s scenes first and then focus on Nana’s part. However, Nana insisted on coming to the set even when he didn’t have any work on those days, as he called it “his own film.”
Seeing Nana’s commitment, Sai was touched, but she soon faced the wrath of the actor’s insecurity. She recalled that since she focused on Shabana and Om Puri during the first three days of the film’s shoot, Nana felt neglected. She said, “I was running after Shabana and Om Puri for three days, possibly Nana felt neglected. After three days when they packed off and I came to Nana. He threw a tantrum on the second day of shoot over small issue about chappals not being right, and it was a holy tantrum, everyone was stunned.”
Sai revealed that her daughter was friendly with Nana and helped calm him down, but this didn’t stop Nana from throwing another tantrum. Recalling the same, she said, “Once again it happened and he said, ‘I am going. I don’t want to work in this rotten film.’ He was off but everyone placated him. The third time it happened during the dubbing session and he threw the pages and said, ‘I won’t do this.'”
Sharing how she lost her temper on Nana, Sai said, “The third time I lost my temper and I asked him to leave. I told him to either do this or walk out. I said, ‘I have had enough of your tantrums. Can’t you behave like a professional.’ Nana stormed out but after half-an-hour he came back and warned me, ‘You are safe because you are a woman otherwise you would not have been here,’ and he stormed out again.” Sai shared that Nana, however, calmed down by the next morning and called her to ask for the shift timing to complete his dubbing. “He was as good as gold the next day,” Sai said.
