The department has also increased compensation to Rs 10 lakh in case a woman dies due to rape. Earlier, the compensation was Rs 2 lakh in case the rape of a working woman leads to her death. The sum was Rs 1 lakh for women who were not working.

According to the changes introduced by the government to the scheme in August this year, the compensation was increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. However, the eligibility criteria was made more stringent, said one of the PILs.

The state has revised the criteria for those who can avail the scheme and increased the maximum financial assistance to Rs 10 lakh in cases where victims were mentally challenged or then suffered traumatic injuries after gangrape.

The scheme is aimed at providing financial, medical and legal aid, rehabilitation and counselling to victims of rape, child abuse and acid attacks. At present, a maximum of Rs 3 lakh in assistance is given to victims.
