After complaints of rejection of claims, Maharashtra legal body says can’t deny compensation to rape victims over insufficient documents

According to a government resolution (GR) passed in 2017, it is mandatory for DLSA to sanction an amount of Rs 30,000 within seven days of filing an FIR.

The Economic Survey of Maharashtra 2019-20 tabled on Thursday, stated that while there were 1,153 beneficiaries of the Manodhairya scheme in the previous year, until October 2019, the number of beneficiaries fell by more than half to 462.

The department has also increased compensation to Rs 10 lakh in case a woman dies due to rape. Earlier, the compensation was Rs 2 lakh in case the rape of a working woman leads to her death. The sum was Rs 1 lakh for women who were not working.

The scheme is aimed at providing financial, medical and legal aid, rehabilitation and counselling to victims of rape, child abuse and acid attacks. At present, a maximum of Rs 3 lakh in assistance is given to victims.
