India saw 84 internet shutdowns in 2024, more than any other democracy: Report

India cut internet access 84 times last year, down from 116 in 2023 but still the most in any democratic country, according to digital rights organisation Access Now.

In its action taken report tabled in Parliament earlier this month, the committee directed the DoT to lay down a clear cut principle of proportionality and procedure for lifting of internet shutdowns in coordination with the home ministry to prevent any misuse of the suspension rules.

The current mechanism to issue internet shutdown orders causes “significant inconvenience to local public at large”, said the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in a letter to the government. Telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are members of the IAMAI, which also counts Big Tech companies like Google, Meta and Apple as its members.
