Arjun Ram Meghwal biography

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Rajasthan's Bikaner Arjun Ram Meghwal retained the Ministry of Law and Justice as a Minister of State with independent charge in the newly formed NDA government at the Centre. He is also the Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.

Meghwal was the Union Law Minister since May 2023 when he replaced Kiren Rijiju. Meghwal is now a four-time Lok Sabha MP after winning the 2024 General Elections from the Bikaner seat by just over 50 thousand votes.

The BJP leader is a retired IAS officer, who entered the administrative services and went on to serve as the District Magistrate (Collector) in the Government of Rajasthan.

The 71-year-old leader served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resource, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation during Modi’s first term as Prime Minister, and has been a member of the BJP for over a decade.

In the year 2009, Meghwal was elected as the Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha from Bikaner and was re-elected in the 2014 general election for the 16th Lok Sabha. During his 2nd term as an MP, he was the Chief Whip of the BJP in Lok Sabha. The Speaker also nominated him as the Chairman of House Committee in the lower house.

A defining image of Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal dates back to 2015. As the BJP’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha at the time, Meghwal used to cycle to Parliament in his trademark Rajasthani turban, kurta-pyjama and a sleeveless jacket. A banner on his cycle, with the BJP’s colours in the background, would proclaim that he was the MP from Bikaner.

This symbolic image helped lend Meghwal an image of simplicity and humility – two traits that have stuck with him till this day.
