Aparupa Poddar

Aparupa Poddar was born on 8 January 1986 in Arambagh, Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. She is the daughter of Md. Shakir Ali and Farida Begum. She completed her schooling from Arambagh Girls' High School and graduated from Arambagh College with a degree in Political Science.

Poddar began her political career as a student leader. She was the president of the Arambagh College Students' Union from 2006 to 2007. In 2009, she was elected as a member of the Arambagh Municipality. She served as the chairperson of the municipality from 2010 to 2014.

In 2014, Poddar was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Arambagh constituency. She defeated her nearest rival, Rathin Roy of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), by a margin of 1,22,000 votes. She was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019, defeating Roy by a margin of 1,50,000 votes.

As a member of parliament, Poddar focused on issues concerning her constituency, advocating for improved infrastructure, healthcare, and education. She has also been a vocal critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Notably, TMC decided to drop her along with six other sitting MPs from the 2024 Lok Sabha candidates list.

Poddar is a member of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). She is the younger sister of Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the AITC. She is married to Afrin Ali, a businessman.
