After making 1 million email ids public and thus getting criticised for ignoring user privacy, TRAI has also faced some more mockery, because one of the public responses that it put out on its paper on OTTs and Net Neutrality.
One particular letter, an email written by a man to his girlfriend, which was probably sent mistakenly to TRAI, has become the subject of much entertainment for India’s netizens. The love letter is still available on the link here, and is getting widely shared online.
The letter, which has a spattering of phrases from Malayalam as well, is quite a long one and appears to have been written by a man to his girlfriend who appears to be rather dedicate. It’s rather cheesy in bits (the man really goes on praising his girlfriend’s smiles, looks, etc) but then given that this is now public, a lot of people are busy reading it.
Of course, the fact that TRAI didn’t even check what the responses were like before putting them up, shows the haphazard way this whole exercise was carried out.

TRAI had divided comments it received into three sections- Comments from the Service Providers; Comments from the Service Providers’ Association, and Comments from other Stakeholders (which includes the regular folks, tech start-ups, etc.)
In the comments from other stakeholders, the love letter is also visible. Yesterday for some brief periods, the comments had started showing a 404 error which led some to believe that perhaps TRAI was taking down the email ids. Sadly the emails ids are still visible for all to see.
Net Neutrality or not, TRAI has indeed shown scant regard for user privacy by exposing 1 million ids to spammers. The debate on Net Neutrality is also unlikely to die down, given that the government and TRAI are mulling a law that will clarify the do’s and don’ts on the subject.
For the man who sent the letter to TRAI, he’ll probably check the email id more carefully for all future communications.
