Samsung claims to sell 1 million units of Tizen-powered Z1 smartphone

India is the only country where the Tizen-powered Z1 has launched so far.

Samsung India claims it has sold over 1 million Tizen-powered Samsung Z1 smartphones since the launch in January 2015.

In a press statement, Asim Warsi, Vice-President-Marketing, Mobile and IT, Samsung India, said, “Samsung Z1 features an easy to use UI that offers a smooth and fast experience to ensure a seamless migration to smartphones. We are happy to see the response the device has received and will continue to grow the range for Tizen- powered smartphones.”

Incidentally India is the only country where the Tizen-powered Z1 has launched so far. Samsung was supposed to launch Tizen phones in Russia, Japan, as well but that did not take place.

The Z1 has which is priced at Rs 5,700 sports a 4-inch WVGA PLS display along with a 3.1 MP rear camera and a VGA front camera. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 768MB RAM and 4GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 64GB.

The device measures 120.4 x 63.2 x 9.7 mm and weighs 112 grams. It is powered by a 1500mAh battery and comes with regular connectivity options like WiFi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and GPS. Tizen is a Linux-based operating system is developed to compete with Android.

On the app front, Tizen OS comes with its Tizen Store. Android apps run through OpenMobile ACL. Tizen doesn’t have in-built support for Android apps, so users have to download OpenMobile’s app compatibility layer to run popular Android apps. All Android apps do not work on Tizen, however, few popular apps, like WhatsApp, do work.

The Tizen platform that also powers products like Samsung televisions, cameras, and Samsung wearable devices.
