A BA first-year student of Dimoriya College, situated about 30 km from Guwahati, committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train, hours after he allegedly called up his family to

complain about ragging in his hostel.

Chintumoni Bordoloi from Kaliajari village in Morigaon district had joined the hostel only on Friday after having enrolled himself in the BA course last month.

“I came to know about the incident on Sunday afternoon when Himangshu Sarma, superintendent of the boys’ hostel, called me up to say that a newly-admitted boarder was killed after being run over by a railway train. His family members have complained of ragging,” Principal Ramcharan Bharali told The Indian Express over telephone.

Bharali, quoting the hostel superintendent, said the boarder had gone to the nearby Jagiroad town on Sunday morning to purchase some books. “I am told that there was no ragging in the hostel. However,I am taking the matter seriously and conducting our own inquiry. Anybody found guilty will be handed over to the police,” the principal said.

Sources in his native village,22 km from Morigaon town, where the body was taken after the postmortem, however said his family members have claimed that the deceased had called up his elder brother Ranjit Bordoloi on Saturday night and told him that he was being subjected to ragging in the hostel.

While the student was killed by the 4055 Down Brahmaputra Mail near Jagiroad railway station at around 10 am,the Government Railway Police has registered an FIR of unnatural death.
