NEW DELHI: Amitabh Bachchan,who had turned down an honorary doctorate from an Australian university two years back as a mark of protest against racial attacks on Indian students,has finally decided to accept it. The Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane has offered the 69-year-old veteran his fourth doctorate for his contribution to the world of entertainment. Bachchan has already received three honorary doctorates. “Doctorate given at De Montfort Univ,Leicester UK,Jhansi Univ,Delhi Univ,and now at QUT,Brisbane… honoured and so humbled!” the actor tweeted.

Landslip blocks elephant path

PALANI: A landslip in the wake of heavy rain has blocked the path used by elephants at the famous Palani hill temple,officials said on Sunday. Local municipal engineers said the landslip on the “Yanai Pathai” could have been caused as authorities did not take up afforestation of the hills. The landslip near ‘Valli sunai’ spring had blocked the elephant path,used by most pilgrims,to about 30 feet. It would take seven days to repair the pathway,sources said. “For now we have stacked sand bags to prevent further landslip,” officials added.

One killed by Naxals in Gadchiroli

NAGPUR: A group of Naxalites allegedly killed a civilian in a Bhamragarh village of Gadchiroli district,police said on Sunday. Pandu Bodka Kovase (38) was dragged out of his house in Kosefundi in Bhamragarh taluka on Saturday by about “10-12 armed Naxals” and shot dead,police said.

Three Sikhs get Heritage Awards

NEW YORK: Three prominent Sikhs,including senior Indian diplomat and author Navtej Sarna,have been given the Sikh Heritage Awards for their contribution to “elevating the Sikh experience”. Sarna received the award from the Sikh Art and Film Foundation on Saturday at an awards gala. Sarna,currently India’s ambassador to Israel,is the author of two novels “The Exile” (2008 ) and “We Weren’t Lovers Like That” (2003). Besides Sarna,Heritage Awards were also presented to Jaspal Bindra,CEO Asia,Standard Chartered PLC for Leadership and filmmaker Gurinder Chadha (“Bend It Like Beckham”) for Art.
