In a Facebook post written on Monday, Bhatt—who has been a committed Sangh pracharak for several years in the past—had expressed surprise at Bhagwat being given Z-plus security cover.

Days after he questioned the Z-plus security upgrade for RSS sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, BJP leader Kailash Nath Bhatt resigned as state party spokesperson on Wednesday.

“My post on Shri Bhagwat offended many within and outside the party…so I decided to tender my resignation,” he told The Indian Express.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Bhatt had expressed surprise at Bhagwat being given Z-plus security cover. “I don’t know why param pujya sarsanghchalak ji has been given Z-plus security and whether he has accepted it. Today the country’s security personnel themselves are not safe. Just recently, our soldiers were killed in Manipur… Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her security

“God is responsible for everybody’s security so why the fear… Please think…whether this security won’t distance you from the (RSS) cadre… Won’t this be called a status symbol? I couldn’t restrain my thoughts, I am sorry for this mistake,” he wrote.

Bhatt later apologised, saying he had spoken with “half and premature” knowledge. “After talking to friends and swayamsevaks, I admit my mistake. Today, some powers are trying to weaken and destabilise the nation… therefore, the security cover to param pujya sarsanghchalak ji is extremely important in national interest,” he posted on Facebook.

On Wednesday, however, Bhatt sent his resignation to state party president Ashok Parnami. “In the interest of the organisation, I am resigning from the post of state spokesperson,” he wrote in his resignation letter.

When contacted, Parnami said: “I received a message from him in the morning saying he wanted to resign in the interest of the sangathan. The party has accepted his resignation. It is not clear at this point what new role will he be given.”
