The Mohali Municipal Corporation continued its anti-encroachment drive for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, triggering protests at several spots across Phase 11 and Phase 10. When the MC team reached Phase 11 in the morning to remove illegal structures, local residents opposed the action. The situation escalated briefly, prompting DSP City-2 Harsimran Bal to arrive at the spot and pacify the crowd. Officials then directed residents to voluntarily remove their encroachments by 3 pm, after which people began dismantling their own temporary structures.

In Phase 11, many residents had allegedly opened shops in front of their houses. Others had erected temporary sheds, boards, platforms and extended structures, occupying public space for years, affecting traffic flow and sanitation. The MC stated that numerous complaints had been received regarding these obstructions.

The team later moved to Phase 10, where a well-known immigration firm, Sea Bird, was found to have constructed illegal rooms, a bathroom and a large tin-and-fibre shed in the parking area behind its showroom. When the MC prepared to demolish the structures, the owners resisted and stopped the team, causing temporary tension.

Putting forward his side, company owner Pirtpal Singh Bobby said, “We face a security threat, and we have been provided police protection as well. For security reasons, we had covered the back area of the showroom.”

Additional police force was immediately deployed to control the situation. Officials reiterated that no illegal construction will be tolerated, and that action will continue strictly in accordance with the law. Under the supervision of the Duty Magistrate, teams of Mohali MC and GMADA worked throughout the day. Shopkeepers were given time until 10 am Wednesday to clear remaining encroachments.

While talking to The Indian Express, MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu said, “No one is above law, and no one will be spared for illegal occupation.” He added that a proposal has been sent to the government to form a committee to draft a stricter policy to prevent future encroachments.

The Commissioner said that the entire demolition cost will be recovered from encroachers, along with an additional penalty added to their property tax bills, as many continued their illegal occupations despite repeated notices, forcing the MC to deploy heavy machinery for removal.
