Pakistan-based militants make desperate bid to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir

BSF observed movement of 3 militants close to the International Border on the intervening night of Jan 24-25.

Hours before the arrival of US President Barack Obama, a group of three terrorists made a desperate attempt to cross the International Border to sneak into Jammu Kashmir early on Sunday. The attempt, however, was foiled by BSF troops.

The infiltration attempt, which could not succeed despite a cover of unprovoked firing provided by Pakistan Rangers, came around 2 am on Sunday in R S Pura sector. On seeing the terrorists approach the border, the BSF opened fire forcing them to retreat, sources said, adding that the firing by Pakistan Rangers also stopped after some time.

Ahead of Obama’s visit to attend the Republic Day parade in Delhi, the BSF has deployed additional personnel and increased the number of its patrols and nakas following spurt in movement by suspected terrorists on Pakistan side of the border for the past few days. This has followed reports that terrorists may attack soft targets like schools, civilian population and even vehicles plying on the national highway during US President’s visit.

Lt General H K Singh, General Officer Commanding of 16 Corps, which is guarding the Line of Control from Chhamb to Poonch sector in Jammu region, had last week said that nearly 200 terrorists were waiting across the LoC looking for an opportunity to sneak into Jammu region. The Army troops were maintaining highest degree of alert, he said.

In view of these inputs, Army schools across Jammu region have been closed as a precautionary measure from January 22-30 and a multi-tier security blanket have been thrown across the state.

The MA Stadium, where state Governor N N Vohra will take the salute at Republic Day parade on Monday, has been made out of bound for civilians.

While police and paramilitary personnel have laid special nakas at various roads, sniffer dogs have also been pressed into service.

Surveillance is being maintained at all sensitive places and the vehicles passing through nakas checked.
