BJP MP Hema Malini on Wednesday blamed the father of a two-year-old girl for her death in the road accident involving the actress’s Mercedes, triggering a sharp reaction from the grieving family members who are still recovering from their injuries in hospital.

In a series of tweets, Hema Malini said the girl, Chinni, could have been saved had her father followed traffic rules. “How I wish the girl’s father had followed the traffic rules — then this accident could have been averted & the lil one’s life safe!,” (sic) she tweeted from her official Twitter handle.

Reacting to this, the girl’s father Hanuman Khandelwal said, “Which traffic rules did we not follow? Were we speeding? Did we not wear seat belts? It was the actor who was not wearing seat belts. It was her car that was being driven at over 100 kmph and she was the one who left the scene of the accident without even inquiring about us.”

He added, “Important people say anything they want to from their comfort zones. If she has the courage, let her come and confront us.” Dausa police confirmed that Hema’s car was speeding and that she was not wearing a seat belt, due to which she hit the LCD screen behind the front seat.

“The MP’s car was definitely speeding and she did not have a seat belt on, the driver told us. It hit the smaller car and then smashed into the divider. Also, the area was well lit, the Alto driver had indicated that he was turning, so it was not his fault,” investigating officer Rajendra Tyagi told The Indian Express.

Hema Malini’s Mercedes crashed into the Alto in Dausa last Thursday, leaving Chinni dead and six others injured. The actor was also injured, for which she was treated at the city’s Fortis Hospital. The other injured persons are being treated at SMS Hospital. Hema’s daughter Esha Deol had earlier announced that the actor would provide financial assistance to the family. However, while Hema Malini said “my heart goes out to the child…and the family members”, she made no mention of financial aid.

Rights panel issues notice

The Rajasthan Human Rights Commission has served a notice to police and health authorities in Dausa regarding the accident. It has sought a report from the superintendent of police, Dausa, on the action taken against Hema Malini for speeding, and from the Chief Medical and Health Officer of Dausa asking why the two-year-old girl had not been referred to Jaipur.
