Funds needed for Konkan Railway doubling, states asked to share costs: Vaishnaw in Lok Sabha
Vaishnaw said that Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has taken up the work of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the doubling of identified sections (approx 263 km) to increase the capacity of the route.
The Ministry of Railways has the maximum share — 66.35% — in KRCL, followed by Maharashtra (15.11%), Karnataka (10.30%), Goa and Kerala (4.12% each). (PTI)
Stating that the doubling of Konkan Railway Line, which passes through the geologically sensitive Western Ghats, is necessary, Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw Wednesday said that the state governments concerned have been approached to make a contribution, as per their share, to the project.
Vaishnaw said that Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has taken up the work of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the doubling of identified sections (approx 263 km) to increase the capacity of the route.
“Out of the 739-km route under Konkan Railways’ jurisdiction, doubling of Roha-Veer and Madgaon-Majorda sections (around 55-km stretch) has already been completed. To increase the capacity of the remaining 685-km route, doubling is required. This requires substantial investment with the contribution from all the shareholding state governments,” said the minister in the Lok Sabha.
KRCL was established in 1990 with five shareholders: the Ministry of Railways and the governments of the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.
The Ministry of Railways has the maximum share — 66.35% — in KRCL, followed by Maharashtra (15.11%), Karnataka (10.30%), Goa and Kerala (4.12% each). The Konkan Railway line extends from Roha in Maharashtra to Thokur in Karnataka.
The Ministry of Railways has also proposed a third Financial Restructuring Initiative to strengthen the financial and operational performance of KRCL in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The proposal includes major infrastructure investments aimed at enhancing line capacity, safety and efficiency along the Konkan Railway route.
The Konkan line was one of the five railway projects which was evaluated in the 104th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) held recently to review infrastructure proposals in line with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan.
Some of the key works under this plan include the construction of two new tunnels at Pernem and Old Goa, and three new crossing stations at Mayem, Neura-O-Grande and Mookambika Road-Byndoor. These upgrades are expected to reduce congestion, improve operational efficiency and boost regional connectivity.
