Man kills seven of family, commits suicide

The only earning member in the family, Kanat, a resident of Nani Kosbadi village in Dharampur taluka, was depressed and for the past few months.

A 36-year-old man allegedly killed seven family members and later committed suicide on Sunday for unknown reasons at a village in Valsad district, police said.

According to police, Shravan Kanat, a tribal sugarcane farm labourer, silt throats of his wife Shanta (34), sons Viral (12) and Akshay (19), daughters Henkuben (17), Jarshila (14) and Yamina (19) and her one-year-old daughter Priti when they were asleep.

The only earning member in the family, Kanat, a resident of Nani Kosbadi village in Dharampur taluka, was depressed and for the past few months, had not been going to work, sub-inspector S J Pandya said.

“The reason for such a drastic step is not yet known, but after talking to his brother and villagers we came to know that he was mentally unstable. Earlier, he worked as farm labourer in sugarcane fields. Further probe is on,” said Kanat.
