A DAY after an all-party delegation wound up its two-day visit to the Valley without making any breakthrough, a 20-year-old youth became the latest victim of pellets in Anantnag, south Kashmir, on Tuesday morning.
Naseer Ahmad was killed and more than 100 people injured when the police and paramilitary forces fired pellets to control protesters in Seer Hamdan village of Anantnag district.
While Naseer was declared dead on arrival at hospital, a district health official said a woman was brought in critical condition. “We received 80 injured people in hospital — all of them hit by pellets,” the official said.
According to reports, as villagers at Seer Hamdan were protesting against night raids by the security forces — locals said they had foiled the “first attempt” at raiding the village Monday night, and the security personnel returned in the morning and allegedly beat up several people — the police and paramilitary personnel fired pellets and tear smoke shells. While Naseer succumbed, Jameela Akhter, 35, was hit on the head by a tear smoke shell and is stated to be critical. She has been admitted in a Srinagar hospital.
At Seer Hamdan, thousands of people attended the funeral of Ahmad, many of them raising pro-freedom slogans.
In Srinagar, meanwhile, a 17-year-old, Musaib Ahmad, succumbed at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, taking the death toll to 75 since the unrest began on July 8 following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani.
Musaib was injured on Sunday when police fired tear smoke shells at a protest in Wadoora village of north Kashmir.
While restrictions continued in many parts of the Valley, “freedom” rallies were organised in south Kashmir. In south Kashmir’s Shopian, a policeman was injured and admitted to hospital.
