J&K govt plans three-day mobile internet ban in Valley

The decision to suspend internet for three days — starting Thursday — was taken after the internet service providers told the police that they can’t slow down the internet speed.

Fearing communal tension in the backdrop of the court ban on slaughter and selling of beef, J&K government is planning to suspend mobile internet in the Valley for three days on Eid. Meanwhile, Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has appealed to the people “not to hurt” religious sentiments of other communities.

Police administration in the Valley fears people would defy the recent court order directing the government to enforce the ban on slaughter of bovines and sale of beef and, as a mark of protest, would post the pictures on social media. They fear this could lead to communal clashes.

“This ban has been decided in a meeting of top police officers,” said a police officer, adding that, “there are apprehensions that after the slaughter of animals (bovines) on Eid, some people would post the pictures on social media. This may trigger unrest in some parts of Jammu.”
