India to send fresh request to UN against Masood Azhar

INDIA IS likely to send a second request to United Nation’s al Qaeda Sanctions Committee to put Masood Azhar in the banned list, and this time it will include more evidence on the Jaish-e-Mohammed chief and his various activities as gathered by NIA.

India’s first request, sent in February, was on put on “technical hold” by China for “not meeting requirements”. The two-page document sent earlier had mentioned Azhar’s role in engineering Pathankot and other terror attacks in India but did not elaborate the evidence against him.

“This time all those details would be included. All evidence that NIA has collected against Azhar will be sent,” said a security establishment officer.

Sources said NIA has collected considerable evidence to link Azhar to the Pathankot attack. These include phone intercepts and numbers that have been successfully associated with al Rehmat Trust run by Jaish, funding trails of its publications such as al Qalam where Azhar’s brother Abdul Rauf claimed responsibility for the attack and “open source” evidence that connect Azhar to Jaish.

“Apart from this, it is proven that Azhar is a member of a banned organisation. Jaish is not just sanctioned by the UN but is also banned in Pakistan. All this would be used to extract UN sanction against him,” said the officer.
