To eliminate the possibility of confidential documents being leaked from MU’s Kalina campus, the university has sought advice from the Israel consulate in the city on tightening security.

According to MU officials, almost a fortnight ago, officials of the Israel consulate in Mumbai reviewed the security arrangements at the MU, in the backdrop of the engineering exam scam involving the university’s employees and former students.

According to the police, the officials, after receiving WhatsApp images of hall tickets, allegedly pulled out the corresponding answer sheets from the examination house on the Kalina campus and handed them over to agents. The agents took the sheets to students, who allegedly wrote out correct answers in the spaces they had deliberately left blank. These answer sheets were then returned to the stacks in the examination house.

“Following the arrests, V-C Sanjay Deshmukh formed a fact-finding committee, which proposed the installation of CCTV cameras and use of intrusion-detection software. It was also decided to approach the Israel consulate in Mumbai as we have a tie-up with them,” said a senior MU official.

Representatives of an Israeli firm examined critical points on the campus, including the examination hall and the buildings under construction. “The purpose of the visit by Israeli experts was to find out the lacuna in the security measures,” the official said.

Leeladhar Bansod, Deputy Registrar, PR, University of Mumbai, said Deshmukh visited Israel in September 2015 and as part of an interaction on smart cities, he came across a few Israeli companies that work in the areas of safe cities/buildings.

“After the copying racket, the V-C decided to install foolproof security at the examination house and contacted the Israeli companies. He contacted the consulate general of Israel to suggest experts who could provide solutions. He is also in touch with some Indian companies on the issue,” Bansod told The Indian Express.
