The Pune rural police on Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with the murder of Lonavala Municipal Council chief Bhupendra Hiralal Chaudhari (53) on Tuesday.

The arrested have been identified as Vaibhav Gawli (28) and Nandu Aurange (50),both cousins and residents of Lonavala. The police have launched a manhunt for the prime suspect,Sumit Prakash Gawli, and his accomplice Jafar Shaikh.

Inspector Sudam Darekar of Lonavala police said three teams have been deputed to track down Sumit and Jafar. The police suspect that the murder was a fallout of political rivalry between Gawlis and Choudhari. Aurange was also a known political rival of Choudhary, they said.

Naming Gawli and Shaikh as the main assailants, police said they have also identified those who had helped the assailants to escape from the municipal council after the murder. A gang had attacked Choudhary with sharp weapons on Tuesday afternoon. The assailants had also attacked Umesh Mudliyar, member of education board of the council, who was present in Choudhari’s office at the time. Mudliyar is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chinchwad.
