Trinamool Congress MLA Ashok Ghosh on Wednesday stirred a controversy by making disparaging remarks about rape victims in the Assembly.

Speaking during the debate on Governor’s address, the MLA from Salkia in Howrah district said the government could not take the responsibility of protecting a woman from molestation if she ventured out of her house at 2 in the night.

“People are hitting the rooftop crying rape. Why should women go out at 2 in the night? Daughters and wives of our households will never do that. They do not come from Park Street at that time,” Ghosh said pointing to the Park Street rape case.

Later,he said he was not at all ashamed of what he had said in the Assembly. “What business does a woman have to go to Park Street at night?”
