In love with dance, in need of money and desperate to make it to a popular TV reality show, a boy and a girl from Faridabad are suspected to have committed a macabre crime – the abduction and murder of a 13-year-old boy, police said Thursday.
The duo, both 17 years old, apparently zeroed in on their victim after seeing his fondness for dance, said police sources. The 13-year-old, who lived in South-East Delhi, had recently started dance practice, the sources added. “The duo wanted a ransom of Rs 60,000. They claimed somebody had told them they would need the money to fund their dream of making it to the TV dance show in Mumbai,” said a police officer. A few months ago, both had been eliminated in the third round of a dance reality show in Mumbai, the officer added.
DCP (South-East) M S Randhawa said the duo allegedly abducted the boy on September 16, on the pretext of a dance programme, and headed to Uttarakhand. “They stayed at a friend’s house for a night, but got scared and allegedly strangled him with a belt at a hilltop in Ranikhet the next morning. They pushed the body from the cliff and returned to Delhi September 18,” he added.

Despite having killed the boy, the duo still tried to extort money from his family, the police said.
According to Randhawa, the girl called up the victim’s father and demanded the ransom of Rs 60,000. “During investigation, it emerged the number from which the ransom call was made was registered in the name of a Jaitpur resident. The documents, however, were found to be forged.
Later, a team led by Inspector Aishvir Singh tracked down the location of the caller to Sector 37 in Faridabad, but the caller kept on changing her location as well as the venue for delivering the ransom.” Police also found the number used for the ransom call had been in Uttarakhand between September 16 and 18.
Luck ran out for the duo after police began looking into information about the suspicious movement of a boy and a girl on a motorcycle in and around Faridabad. The vehicle was found abandoned, but police reached the registered owner. “He said his motorcycle had been borrowed by a boy who used to visit a dance academy in Faridabad,” said Randhawa. “Police apprehended the duo Wednesday. During questioning, they broke down and confessed to their crime.”
