A 28-year-old pizza delivery boy was arrested on Sunday for allegedly molesting a minor girl in Southeast Delhi’s Ashram area. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the incident occurred around 11.45 am when the accused, identified as Amit, employed with a major pizza chain, went to the girl’s residence to deliver an order, police said. A case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered.
DCP (Southeast district) M S Randhawa said a case was registered at Lajpat Nagar police station and the accused has been arrested. “The child’s statement will be recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate on Monday,” he said.
A spokesperson for Domino’s, where the accused worked, said, “Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd (JFL)/Domino’s Pizza would like to state that it has been brought to our notice that one of our delivery boys from the Lajpat Nagar restaurant has been accused of conducting himself in an unlawful manner. We would like to reiterate that at JFL, there is zero tolerance for any such unlawful behaviour and we have terminated the services of the employee concerned with immediate effect.”
According to police, the victim on Sunday requested her father, who works for a leading MNC, to order a pizza for her. Her father placed the order online. The girl’s family lives in a three-storey building. The family occupies all the floors. She was on her way from the first floor to the third when the incident occurred, police said.
“Around 11.20 am, Amit was asked to deliver three orders, including one at the victim’s home in Ashram. Around 11.40 am, he reached the victim’s home. Amit delivered the pizza to the girl’s grandmother on the third floor. As he turneedd around to leave, he notic the victim climbing the stairs. Once her grandmother went inside, he stopped the victim and allegedly inappropriately touched her in the staircase after switching off the lights,” a police officer said.
Police said the accused got scared after the victim started crying. Amit then escaped. The girl told her mother about the incident, who informed relatives. They went to the Lajpat Nagar outlet of Domino’s to enquire about Amit.
“The family did not find him as Amit had still not returned. Then, they made a call to the PCR. Police immediately reached the spot and the victim was taken to AIIMS. On the basis of the victim’s mother complaint, a case was registered and the accused arrested from Madangir area,” the officer said.
Police have recovered CCTV footage showing the accused entering the locality and parking his motorcycle. Initially, the accused denied any wrongdoing, but later confessed to the crime, police said.
“The accused is a resident of Dakshinpuri and was employed with the Domino’s outlet around three months ago,” the officer said.
Domino’s claimed Amit’s police verification record was checked before he was hired.
