Delhi: Cop hit by speeding car he was trying to stop, critical

The incident took place Tuesday afternoon when a group of traffic policemen were inspecting vehicles at the checkpost, near Shamshan ghat in Geeta Colony.

A 45-year-old traffic police constable was critically injured after being hit by a speeding car, allegedly driven by an 18-year-old law student, at a check post in east Delhi.

The Honda City car, headed in the direction of Shakarpur, was found to be traveling at over the speed limit. The policemen, including Head Constable Yogendra, signalled the car to stop. However, instead of stopping the car, the driver increased its speed and hit the constable, who was thrown 10 feet from the impact. The rest of the policemen gave chase for over 300 metres and managed to stop the car.

While the driver was nabbed, Yogendra was rushed to LNJP Hospital and later taken to Max Hospital. He is in a critical condition and has been kept under observation.

The driver has been identified as Nikhil Kumar, who was accompanied by his friend Rahul at the time of the incident, said police. Nikhil has been arrested and police have questioned Rahul.

A case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions ), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant) 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, has been registered against the accused.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishi Pal told The Indian Express that the car has been impounded and the driver medically examined.
