Amid growing demand for his resignation over the alleged molestation of a research scholar by a college professor, St Stephen’s College Principal Valsom Thampu on Tuesday alleged there have been attempts to implicate him falsely in the case and claimed that he was being hounded “like an animal”.

Thampu said his counsel, former judge Manmohan Sarin, had advised him to report the matter to the college-level probe panel — the Internal Complaints Committee.

“Since the matter is sub-judice, I appeal to all those concerned that this constant character assassination of me as well as the college should be avoided,” he told reporters.

Thampu had earlier claimed that the “handlers” of the controversy were using the complainant against him and also claimed that she had been “coached to do a sting on him”.

On his earlier claim that “certain elements” were after him, Thampu named the Old Stephanians Association, an alumni group not recognised by the college, as one of them. He refused to name any of the other elements, saying “the obvious need not be stated”.

Thampu claimed that he was being dragged into the case that was supposed to be between the complainant and the accused, and he has somehow emerged as the “principal offender” in the case.
