Now, Capt Amarinder Singh aides reach out to Bajwa supporters

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had dared Amarinder to hold a similar rally.

A day after newly appointed Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh reached out to his rival Partap Singh Bajwa, efforts to bridge the gap between the two leaders are continuing apace.

On Sunday, Bajwa’s wife and MLA Charanjit Kaur and his brother Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa got phone calls from an Amarinder aide, who asked them to bury their differences with Amarinder.

“If I am invited for a meeting with Amarinder, I will certainly go. It is time we all worked together for the party. I welcome his move to make Bajwa’s men feel they will be looked after,” said Fateh Bajwa.

Charanjit Kaur was asked to come to Amritsar on Wednesday, where Amarinder is holding a party meeting in the evening. A member of the family said she will be going for the meeting.

Another Bajwa loyalist said he got a call on Sunday from an Amarinder aide. Jasbir Singh Dimpa, a former MLA, described the PPCC chief’s efforts to reunite the party as “a welcome step”.

“At least the entire Congress would be on one side now and there would not be any witch hunting,” he said.
Capt Amarinder told The Indian Express that he would get everybody along and ensure that all state leaders were on his stage during Bathinda rally when he will formally take charge of the party.

“I have already spoken to Bajwa and will speak to the rest also,” he said.

Ludhiana MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who had been staying away from all of Amarinder’s events, said he is considering meeting with him. “I sent him a text message congratulating him on his appointment. I have no issues working with him,” said Ashu, confirming another Ludhiana based MLA too has been contacted.

Meanwhile, Amarinder has called a meeting of Congress leaders from Malwa on Thursday in his Moti Bagh palace, to make plans for the Bhatinda rally. The rally is likely to be held on December 13. Much importance is being attached towards making it a grand show ever since the Shiromani Akali Dal recently held a public meeting in the same town, bringing in about 35,000 people for it.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had dared Amarinder to hold a similar rally.

Some Congress leaders are skeptical about his efforts to get reunite the Congress. “Every new PPCC chief has a honeymoon period of two months. After that, we will see if he has been successful or not. He has five-six supporters in each constituency. The trouble will begin when they all will start expecting a ticket for the next Assembly election,” said a Majha-based Congress leader.
