I am trying to explore the unconscious mind with my work, especially in the video series titled Untalkable Drawings,” says artist Manjot Kaur. Her work is part of an ongoing exhibition called “Locating the Mind”,where she, along with another artist Aparneet Kaur, has attempted to initiate a conversation with the audience through sculptures, sound and video installations and paintings.

Currently teaching at the Chandigarh University as an assistant professor in the animation and multimedia department,Manjot’s works explore the processes of the unconscious mind. There is a common ground for fantasy, reality, dreams and abstraction. For instance,Where does this pipe take me to,a gouache-and-ink-on-paper work depicts the journey of a pipe which has innumerable connections and yet no central point.

Aparneet’s works are an absorbing combination of elements from nature, the animal kingdom and the figurative. The Histography series, mixed media on canvas, depicts old, black and white photographs combined with foliage, fossils and coral flowers to create multiple textures that depict the past and the present. The urban landscape in her work is dotted with nature’s glory, which can be seen in her stunning fibreglass sculpture. The figurative (a woman) and the natural come together in a work called Corner.

The exhibition is on at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,till March 25.
