The water level recorded on Monday was 1,152.95 ft, implying that more than 60% of the lake does not haveHot weather has taken a toll on the Sukhna Lake with its water level dropping below 1,153 feet.
Though the Sukhna Lake witnesses a dip in water level every summer, this year more water has receded, exposing portions of the lake bed at the regulator end.
UT director environment PJS Dadwal said Sukhna Lake is rainfed and water level drops during summers. “We can do little and can only hope for early and good rainfall,” said Dadwal.
The trend will continue, as no rainfall is predicted in the next few days. The arrival of monsoon has been delayed by a week, adding to the worry of the environment and engineering department officials. Monsoon is now expected in the first week of July.

Residents of the city experienced a maximum temperature of 41.9 degrees on Thursday with a departure of four degrees from the normal temperature. The Chandigarh Meteorological Department has predicted heat wave across isolated pockets in the city over the next 48 hours.
The weather department has also predicted dry weather conditions in Punjab and Haryana over the next 72 hours with an expected rise in temperature and heatwave conditions in the next 48 hours.
“On Thursday, the weather decreased by 1 degree following the overnight wind experienced across Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana. With the departure from normal being less than 4.5 degrees and maximum temperature less than 45 degrees, technically speaking a heat wave was not experienced by the residents. Hisar with 46 degrees experienced a heat wave. However, residents can expect hot weather conditions with high temperatures and likely heat wave conditions in the next two days,” duty officer, Meteorological Department, said.
According to the weathermen, the residents can expect a respite from the growing heat after May 22. “We are expecting cloudy skies and likely showers on May 22 and May 23, which may come as a respite from the growing heat and may bring down temperatures,” the officer said.
While the heat wave expected over the next 48 hours is not considered dangerous, citizens have been advised by the weather officials to take adequate precautions by keeping themselves duly covered and hydrated while going out.
