10 days on,sparrows start nesting in 15 houses

The efforts made by Vadodara animal activists and supported by the citizens on the World House Sparrow Day have started showing results within 10 days.

The efforts made by Vadodara animal activists and supported by the citizens on the World House Sparrow Day have started showing results within 10 days. Out of the 600-odd artificial nests installed in the city,at least in 15 sparrows are nesting.

March 20 was observed as the World House Sparrow Day,and from Vadodara, members of the Canine Group took up the job to create awareness about the issue. They designed and manufactured specialised boxes as nests at Makarpura GIDC,and so far,600 nests have installed at various locations.

“We have received information about nesting at 15 places. We are quite upbeat about this, because if such result is achieved in just 10 days, then through our efforts, which we plan to continue throughout the year,I think we will be able to make a substantial change in the situation,” said Vishal Thakur of the Canine Group.

On the nesting patterns,he said: “We had designed two types of boxes, one of 8×6 inches and the other one a bit larger. We have come to know that sparrows prefer smaller boxes.”

Thakur added that they plan to make and place 2,000 nests.

He further said that they are still receiving calls from the residents, asking them to provide nests.

“We are trying to convince them that we would first visit the place and decide the ideal place to install the box. Often, the nest installed for sparrows becomes a home for squirrel,” he said.

Thakur said they are overwhelmed with the response of Barodians.

“We have been receiving calls about sparrows’ eggs getting damaged due to faulty location of natural nests, children calling us and informing about chicks being fed by sparrows. We hope they would continue with their support and create a conducive environment for sparrows,” he added.
