Explaining about the day, Swaraj said in the year 2003, under the leadership of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a decision was taken to celebrate Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on January 9. She further stated that the reason behind selecting January 9 for Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas was that Mahatma Gandhi had returned from South Africa on this day in 1915 and this day is being celebrated across the world.
