A noted scholar, India's first education minister and a revolutionary, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992 for his contribution – both as an educationist as a freedom fighter. Born on November 11, 1888, in Mecca, he spent his prime years in Mecca and Medina.
